And can it be – Phatfish

Here’s a new tune (well…it’s two years old, but it’s new to me….compared to the words, the tune is new anyway…) for ‘And can it be’. To my mind the original tune is a belter, but most of us (especially blokes) get a bit confused what we should sing in the last couple of lines. I’ve only listened to this version twice, but am looking forward to getting to know it better.

Phatfish have dispensed with the traditional second verse, with its talk of the ‘firstborn seraph’ (I don’t know if that was their reason…). I’ve posted the lyrics below so you can hum along meaningfully.

On this recording, I particularly like the way they portray the dungeon ‘filling with light’ musically, and the contrast between the more reflective feel in first couple of verses with the more solid, uplifting final verse.

1. And can it be that I should gain
an interest in the Savior’s blood!
Died he for me? who caused his pain!
For me? who him to death pursued?
Amazing love! How can it be
that thou, my God, shouldst die for me?
Amazing love! How can it be
that thou, my God, shouldst die for me?

2. He left his Father’s throne above
(so free, so infinite his grace!),
emptied himself of all but love,
and bled for Adam’s helpless race.
‘Tis mercy all, immense and free,
for O my God, it found out me!
‘Tis mercy all, immense and free,
for O my God, it found out me!

3. Long my imprisoned spirit lay,
fast bound in sin and nature’s night;
thine eye diffused a quickening ray;
I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;
my chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and followed thee.
My chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and followed thee.

4. No condemnation now I dread;
Jesus, and all in him, is mine;
alive in him, my living Head,
and clothed in righteousness divine,
bold I approach th’ eternal throne,
and claim the crown, through Christ my own.
Bold I approach th’ eternal throne,
and claim the crown, through Christ my own.

Before the throne of God above

Don’t know how well this arrangement would go down at most of our church gatherings here at FBC, but perhaps it might work at your place, otherwise I hope it’ll help you celebrate the assurance we can have in Jesus wherever you are now!

Before the throne of God above
I have a strong and perfect plea.
A great high Priest whose Name is Love
Who ever lives and pleads for me
My name is graven on His hands
My name is written on His heart.
I know that while in Heaven He stands
No tongue can bid me thence depart.

When Satan tells me to despair
And tells me of the guilt within
Upward I look and see Him there
Who made an end of all my sin
Because the sinless Savior died
My sinful soul is counted free
For God the just is satisfied
To look on Him and pardon me.

Behold Him there the risen Lamb
My perfect spotless righteousness
The great unchangeable I AM
The King of glory and of grace,
One with Himself I cannot die
My soul is purchased by His blood,
My life is hid with Christ on high
